The Haiti Project’s School Lunch Program is the primary, often the only source, of food for the 750 students who attend the 5 schools of Riviere Mancelle.

The Problem: HUNGER and MALNUTRITION

Hunger and poor nutrition are serious problems in Haiti. Our area is no exception. It is not unusual for people, including the children, to not eat every day. The consequences are stunted physical and intellectual development.

What are we doing about it?

The School Lunch Program.

We believe that everyone working together can create a community where no child goes hungry. Everyone includes you and me, and just as importantly the Haitian students, parents, teachers, school directors and the school administrator. When friends like you partner with us, we can meet the urgent physical needs of the children by providing food for The School Lunch Program.

All other associated expenses are funded separately.

Our goal: feed 750 children, 180 days @ 25¢ a meal

At the same time we are working on long-term solutions by working with parents and students to develop school gardens, hosting nutrition clinics and teaching farmers improved farming practices to increase yields and reduce environmental impact. We are establishing committees of farmers and parents to facilitate buying food from local farmers for the lunch program, rather than buying imported food. We are working very hard to facilitate changes to help these families. But these changes take time.

This is a very important program. Riviere Mancelle has very few resources. Many of the children in the parish go to bed hungry. Their parents earn less than $1.00 US a day, they have no way to feed their children. Sometimes the children are given a piece of sugar cane to chew on in the evening. Although this has calories, it provides no nutritional benefits.

Charitable contributions from people like you are the foundation of The School Lunch Program. This Lent please consider feeding the children as part of your Lenten sacrifice.
